Our Journey

Our Story,
It all started with a love for African countries in a Wendy house at the back of his home and now some 20 years later Jambo Safari is one of the best and well-known tour-operators in South Africa. Chris Grobbelaar is founder and co-owner of Jambo Safari. ‘Jambo’ is to greet someone in Swahili.
Chris was student in Stellenbosch and in his vacation time he drove busses for tourist groups. Some years later after finishing his studies Chris started working for a travel agency in Stellenbosch. Three years later he started his own business by taking groups of South African travellers to Zimbabwe.
“I had all the contacts to get all the necessary permits and documents to take groups across the border. I knew the country well. I loved Zimbabwe and its people. Still do. What we were doing then…during the 1990’s …taking groups with a bus to Zimbabwe was something new. We had up to 80 groups a year. We expanded to include self-drive tours in the packages that we offered. In 2000 the problems in Zimbabwe started. Tourism suffered and we had to adapt.”
Botswana was known for low volume, high cost tourist offerings and Grobbelaar decided to do his own research in a quest to find cost effective alternatives. “I drove up to Botswana. I went to look at the places and talked to the people.” Because of this Jambo Safari managed to offer the self-drive tours to Botswana.
In 2006 Jambo Safari was sold. Grobbelaar and FC Conradie met in 2009 and started another traveling business together. In 2012 they bought Jambo Safari back. “We saw the opportunity to offer a wide range of products to the South African market. We have offerings in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, Mozambique, Zambia, Kenya and Tanzania. The main focus is our neighbouring countries.”
According to Grobbelaar the success of Jambo Safari comes down to two main reasons. “We are adaptable and have various options for traveling. Like when the trouble in Zimbabwe started and now that it is quieter in Mozambique because of their problems. We have more options and that is always needed for success. And we love what we do. We love Africa. We know what we sell because we do all our research ourselves, we go to the places and we see what is possible and what not. We are passionate about traveling…we really like to camp!”
